Washington Dulles Airport Automated People Mover Tunnels


Washington Dulles International Airport's $3.4 billion D2 Development Program was aimed at improving the airport facility to handle increased airport traffic.

Our role on this project was to provide the structural design of the domestic people mover, baggage and tug tunnels, and the ventilation systems and fire/life safety for all tunnels on the project.

The D2 program includes a network of tunnels for new systems, including:

  • Automated People Mover (APM) for domestic passengers
  • Separate APM for International arriving passengers
  • Pedestrian tunnel
  • Underground baggage conveyors
  • Underground roads for the airport tugs
  • Utility tunnels
  • APM vehicle maintenance facility
