Millennium Airport, Swaziland
The existing airport at Matsapa in Swaziland is due to be replaced by the Millennium Airport Project providing significantly improved facilities to enable direct international flights to Europe and Asia. The new airport is located in the flatter, eastern part of the country and is planned to have a 3200m runway and full terminal and support facilities.
Mott MacDonald was engaged by Arab Consulting Engineers of Cairo, the lead consultant, to provide concept design and functional and facilities planning services for the entire new airport. This commenced with the initial assessment of siting and orientation of the airfield in the preferred development zone, through a full demand forecasting and master planning process to development of the individual facilities to a level to enable the local, lower cost designers to complete the detail design.
The terminal building was planned with an initial peak hour capacity of 400 passengers per hour and designed on a 1½ level basis with provision for full in-line baggage screening. The apron was designed to be initially self-manoeuvring with option of developing a parallel pier and contact stands. The runway length was designed for full payload B747 to Europe with a CAT I primary approach. Separations were to Code F with the runway designed to 60m width of full construction. Other facilities included ATC tower & support, fire station, cargo centre, code E sized hangar, GA hangar, ground support building, a royal pavilion, access roads together will full equipment specifications.
