Kilimanjaro International Airport - Master Plan
Kilimanjaro International Airport, built in 1970, is located in Northern Tanzania close to Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro National Parks. The airport serves as the primary entry point for the majority of tourism for Tanzania as well as the northern City of Arusha.
Following the privatisation of Kilimanjaro Airport in 1998 one of the obligations of the concession agreement was to carry out a Master Plan for the airport and its 109ha estate. Mott MacDonald was appointed to carry out this task in mid 1999.
The Master Plan included the following:
- Land Use and Socio-Economic planning for airport and the estate including agriculture, staff accommodation and operational areas, landscape buffers and commercial development.
- Airport Activity including a revised traffic forecast for the airport, annual, seasonal and peak profiles. The forecasts indicate a steady growth of traffic from 160,000 pax to 400,000 pax.
- Airport Environment and Environmental Impact of the proposed land use including a Noise Management Plan with future noise contours for the airport.
- Airfield Development including safeguarding for future taxiways, fire training ground.
- Airport Terminal (Passenger, Cargo, GA and VIP). Operational and facilities planning to a detailed level including ICAO and FAA security requirements.
- Ground Transportation System. Assessment of existing road and rail access together with general and secure parking facilities.
- Airport Commercial Services and facilities including concessionaire outlets in the terminal and proposed export processing zone.
- Airport Operational Support Services including aircraft maintenance (using the exiting B747 capable hangar), vehicle maintenance and equipment refurbishment.
