Keflavik Cargo Apron Extension

Keflavik Cargo Apron Extension

Keflavik International Airport is the most important airport in Iceland for handling international air freight and airmail traffic. However, the existing dedicated cargo aircraft parking facilities are limited and not equipped with hydrant refuelling.

The Airport invited Mott MacDonald to develop a scheme, known as Phase 2, for extending the existing cargo apron within an allocated site constrained by the existing Taxiway November. Our role included reviewing the existing cargo apron pavement and undertaking preliminary pavement design for Phase 2. We also carried out a study of the existing services in order to provide new support infrastructure /services for the extended apron, which included drainage, electrical, comms, fixed ground power, floodlighting and AGL. In addition, we recommended layout routes for a new fuel main and a new fire main to supply underground fuel hydrants and an additional fire hydrant respectively.

The scheme design culminated in three further aircraft stands for code D aircraft including the larger B757-200, and a new access from Taxiway November to provide a hold position to assist with aircraft traffic control on the only taxilane serving both cargo and passenger stands.
