Hong Kong International Airport Passenger Terminal
In 1992 the design of the passenger terminal and concourse complex for Hong Kong's new airport at Chek Lap Kok was awarded to the Mott MacDonald consortium. The consortium's brief was to develop the terminal complex as envisaged by the Airport Master Plan into a detailed working design in readiness for construction to begin in 1994.
At 1.3 km long and covering over 550,000 mē, the terminal with its Y-shaped concourse is the world's largest single airport building. Phase one provides 48 aircraft bays with frontal gates and linking airbridges surrounding the concourse plus 20 remote aircraft gates, enabling the airport to handle 35 million passengers per year.
Within the terminal more than 30,000 mē of space is devoted to duty free and general retail outlets, restaurants, banks, money changers and business service centres.
The consortium's assignment covered the management, planning, design and preparation of tender and contract documents for the foundations and structure, tunnels, building furniture, fittings, services, lighting, signing graphics and mechanical and electrical equipment installations. Special equipment included the people mover, baggage and passenger security screening system, baggage handling system, escalators, lifts and travelators, passenger loading bridges and display systems for flight and baggage information.
Mott MacDonald provided the project director responsible for directing and managing all activities by the 230-strong multi-disciplinary team of architects, structural designers, systems specialists, building services engineers, quantity surveyors, project managers and programmers.
