Funchal Airport Runway Extension
The runway at Funchal Airport has been extended by 1000m on a 150m wide structure 60m above sea level. The new runway is being built at a 3 degree skew from the existing that allows the airport to continue to accept traffic during the construction stages. The design loading was a fully laden Boeing 747-400.
Associated road improvements include realignment of a road onto a new 300m long prestressed concrete viaduct beneath and alongside the runway. A road viaduct within the terminal area, retaining walls and car parking are also to be constructed.
The Mott MacDonald consortium was responsible for the full project management and site supervision of construction, and for providing ANAM with expert technical assistance on all aspects of the project, from review of the tenders through to completion of construction. This includes the independent checking of all detailed designs and for advising ANAM on their adequacy and economy. Mott MacDonald also provided specialists on site to assist with all the major stages of construction, for instance marine works, hydraulic testing, piling and pre-stressing.
