Kraków-Balice International Airport Capital Development Master Plan
The existing airport at Kraków, in southern Poland, is run by the military with a civil aviation enclave comprising a new passenger terminal, an apron suitable for up to Code D aircraft and line maintenance facilities.
Mott MacDonald was appointed as part of an international team to undertake a feasibility study into the future development of Kraków International Airport and the primary constraints and opportunities with potential routes to funding.
We carried out an assessment of the facilities and found that the existing terminal and apron facilities, although nearly new and in good condition, were significantly below the necessary capacity during existing peak periods. The future traffic forecasts indicated that the current traffic of 0.3mppa could easily increase to 4.8mppa in 20 years provided that the airport had a regional role.
We therefore identified that the existing facilities were too small to handle potential future traffic and proposed a strategic development plan and privatisation strategy. This included a phased concept terminal area development, a runway extension assessment including payload/range analysis, surface transport access assessment and a preliminary environmental impact review.
