Dushanbe Airport runway rehabilitation
Dushanbe is the capital city of the land-locked former Russian Republic of Tajikistan. Due to its location, air travel was the only viable mode of international transportation of goods and passengers.
Mott MacDonald was appointed by the EBRD to assist with the emergency evaluation of the runway following complaints by the pilots of wet leased L1011 Tristars from TAP of extremely rough runway conditions. Our initial physical evaluation indicated that the runway was in a poor condition as a result of a lack of maintenance and patch repairs with inferior materials. In addition, the ACNs of the L1011 aircraft were significantly heavier than the capacity of the runway, and their continued use would have resulted in structural failure of the pavement.
Mott MacDonald was then tasked with the detailed feasibility study, design and project management of the strengthening and overlay of the 3,100m runway.
