New Castellon Airport
Castellón de la Plana is located on the Costa Alhazar on the Mediterranean Coast of Spain between Barcelona and Valencia. This area of coast is comparatively underdeveloped for tourism although having the highest per capita wealth in the whole of Spain. The State President identified the need to increase the accessibility of this region of Spain through the development of a new airport.
Mott MacDonald was appointed jointly by the State and Banco Santander to prepare traffic forecasts and operational forecasts as part of the preparation of an overall business plan. This would assist the identification of potential funding structures to enable the development of the new airport.
In the preparation of the traffic forecasts we broke down the traffic by type, including full-service scheduled, low cost, charter and cargo as well as domestic and European by source. We identified a potential market of 2mppa for the airport. We subsequently prepared operational cost forecasts as well as operational and non-operational revenue forecasts. The performance profile was taken from a broad analysis of similar airports in Europe adjusted for the local labour costs and employment conditions.
