Bangkok International Airport Expansion
Mott MacDonald was the international consultant in the General Engineering Consultancy team appointed by The Airports Authority of Thailand in 1999 for the expansion of the existing International airport to its ultimate capacity. Our primary role was on specialist systems including state-of-the-art passenger boarding bridges, docking guidance systems, retrofit HBS compliant automatic baggage handling systems, refuelling and other on-gate services.
The expansion included the construction of two new piers and the refurbishment of three existing piers with the full aircraft services being provided at each gate including provision of 16 new passenger boarding bridges on the new piers and refurbishment of 22 existing passenger boarding bridges. The baggage handling upgrade required the selection of suitable systems to include automatic sortation in combination with automated 3 level hold baggage security screening. This had to be retrofitted in the existing terminal 1 baggage hall.
