Cape Town International Airport Master Plan
Mott MacDonald was appointed to produce a comprehensive long term master plan for Cape Town International Airport, South Africa. Mott MacDonald was responsible for the primary master planning, capacity analysis and facilities planning, financial planning and traffic analysis taking the airport from 2.8 mppa to 16 mppa over the forecast period.
Part of the development programme included the planning of a new 40,000 sqm passenger terminal to provide primary international and domestic departure facilities. The terminal was to be developed on two levels with a raised forecourt for departures and integrated car parks and offices into the landside structure. Ramp planning was also a major issue with most long haul aircraft arriving in the morning from Europe and leaving in the evening, giving a very low availability of apron.
The Final Master Plan incorporated issues of urban planning, land acquisition, environmental impact and noise prediction. Noise was a major issue due to the encirclement of the airport by townships and the need to re-orientate the runways in the long term.
